Uncommon Profiles: Zhixiang Zhuang

Let’s get to know Uncommon architect Zhixiang Zhuang.

How long have you been working in Architecture?

I’ve been working in the field for 5.5 years.

If you could travel back in time and pick any other era to design in, which would it be?

1990's-2000's.

Architecturally speaking, the 1990s had some interesting shifts in architecture, especially coming off the excesses of the 1980s. Deconstructivism with its fragmented forms, unpredictable geometry, and sense of "controlled chaos" went mainstream. Postmodernism stuck around with a bit resurgence in bold colors and playful ornamentation. Sustainable design started to take root (pun intended) with passive solar design, natural ventilation, and early uses of green roofs and recycled materials.

The '90s also saw rapid growth in digital tools with AutoCAD becoming an industry standard, and early 3D modeling reshaping how architects designed.

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

Working out.

Regular exercise plays a powerful role in an architect’s life—it sharpens focus, boosts creativity, and counterbalances the long hours spent at a desk. Physical activity also deepens spatial awareness, helping architects design environments that feel intuitive and human-centered. Plus, staying active supports the kind of energy and confidence needed to lead projects and inspire teams.

What advice would you go back and give to yourself on day one as an architect?

Reading the International Building Code.

Which is great advice! Knowing the International Building Code helps architects avoid design headaches and keeps their projects on track. It’s basically the rulebook that makes sure great ideas can actually get built—safely and legally.

Where do you find your creative inspiration?

Concept photos.

Concept photos spark fresh ideas and help architects visualize mood, material, and form before diving into detailed design. They act as a creative springboard, translating abstract inspiration into grounded architectural expression.
